Black History Month Norway launches 2024 theme and program “Liberation and imagination”
sep. 5
This October, BHMN 2024 invites you to celebrate the theme “Liberation and Imagination.” The theme, deeply rooted in the diverse experiences of Black collective movements and the personal expressions of freedom, serves as a lens through which we examine the complexities of liberation. Drawing upon our rich heritage, creativity, and survival strategies, our communities have historically been spaces where alternative realities are both imagined and demanded. Through our events, we’ll explore how the ideas of liberation and imagination shape our understanding of the past, present, and future.
BHMN 2024 offers events for the entire family, celebrating Black History Month Norway with a dynamic lineup of artist talks, film screenings, and more.
Join us for a conversation with educator and former Black Panther Ericka Huggins, as she discusses her book Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party at Vega Scene. At this event, archivist Lisbet Tellefsen will also discuss her archiving enterprise, which highlights Black liberation and the iconic Angela Davis. At Litteraturhuset in Oslo, hear Professor Hakim Adi delve into his book Pan-Africanism: A History. Youth can explore their own creativity in art workshops led by Diaspora Kollektiv at selected Deichman branches.
The program is continuously expanding—stay updated on the BHMN website.
Commemoration 2024
“We want to create arenas for discovering African and Afro-diasporic history,” BHMN's curator, social anthropologist Michelle A. Tisdel. “BHMN’s goal is to inspire, inform and create engagement around African and Afro-diasporic history in Norway throughout the year,” says Tisdel. “We are interested in how African and Afro-diasporic history can be better documented, preserved, and communicated.”
About BHMN
Black History Month Norway fosters an inclusive public commemoration of past, present and future African histories and heritage. We work to activate, document and highlight African and Afro-diasporic art and cultural heritage in Norway. The BHMN project was started by communications advisor Ida Evita de Leon in Oslo in 2019, under the auspices of the OMOD Center for Social Justice.
